Using video at the event

WorldSkills TV’s current objective is:

provide a large number of short video vignettes from the WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017 (WSAD2017) for all Members, Global Partners (GP), supporters, and stakeholders to use. The aim is to provide at least one vignette per skill, Member.

Criticisms:

  • Expensive to produce – high quality AND high amount
  • Difficult to use – Thousands of clips in Aframe are not easy to trawl through
  • Little evidence of demand – Unlike photography, it’s not clear members need or use these clips
  • Doesn’t produce a few, high-quality, compelling videos needed to publicise the event

During our meeting we discussed

  1. Prepackaged cuts – versions which people can use to put together their own stuff
  2. Could we have a host? Helps with our young audience. Skills Netherlands example. A host trying a skill cf competitor could be used to highlight how skillful the competitor is
  3. Current tone is too serious but where is the room for humour?
  4. Lacking a good general video
  5. Could member countries hire out/book our crews?

Purpose and audience

  1. Videos to promote the competition once its finished to young people, teachers, parents, journalists and delegates
  2. Videos to highlight different aspects of the competition while it is going on
  3. Videos for sponsors
  4. Footage for distribution, e.g. Reuters

  • Keep out of the lower left and upper right quadrants
  • Use social media and volunteers to create volume
  • Use professionals to create few high-quality pieces
