Why is this skill important?
Plastic Die Engineers create moulds using CAD/CAM computer assisted machining systems to be installed in injection moulding machines for the manufacture of plastic products.
This means you will be a crucial link in the manufacturer chain of products that range from cars, phones, home appliances, medical equipment and anything that requires plastic.
A plastic die engineer needs high levels of skill in numeracy, hand and machining skill, polishing, assembling, testing and troubleshooting.

The Challenge
Important elements of the challenge include:
-
Contestants will design and draw a plastic mould with computer aided design software.
-
Next, the part is machined to the requirements of the drawing.
-
The machined part is then assembled ready for testing.
-
Judges expect competitors who can produce components exactly to the specification.
